I’m thrilled to be one of eight female directors selected for the 2016 Women in the Director’s Chair Story & Leadership Program. an intensive hands-on immersion and mentorship, designed to advance the participants’ skills and projects.
I was selected based on my feature script, The Virgin Mary Had a Little Lamb, a coming-of-age dark comedy adapted from my one-woman-play of the same title. The film follows Virginia Maria, a 15-year-old Filipino-Canadian and devout Catholic , whose efforts to not end up as a pregnant teenager like her mother was, backfires when God rewards her chastity by choosing her to give birth to the second coming of Christ. However, unlike in the original holy birth, the Lamb of God in this story turns out to be a literal lamb, the saviour of the animal kingdom, who has come to remind animals that they are loved for more than just protein and seat covers.
The Virgin Mary Had a Little Lamb will be the first Canadian feature film to spotlight Filipino characters in leading roles. It will also be the first Canadian narrative feature film directed by a Filipino-Canadian.
